shoes + hats… oh my!

After the lovely response to the 30s inspiration post last week, I thought I’d share with you another peek into this little treasure. This time it’s a selection of those accessories that make a girl’s heart go pitter-patter: shoes, hats and handbags.

I love the “Robin Hood” style hat at the far top-right!

Aren’t the dance shoes at the bottom so gorgeous?

Overshoes seem like such a quaint accessory from the past, but sometimes I think they’d be quite handy!

Isn’t that Maple Leaf handbag such an interesting design?

What “accessory type” are you? Do hats make you swoon? Or are you constantly obsessing over shoes? Perhaps handbags are what steals your heart? I think I’m firmly in the shoe camp; although handbags are a close second. But given the choice between the two, shoes win out almost always. I’ve been whittling down my shoe collection over the past year and trying to replace them with better quality footwear that I really love. Of course, this doesn’t mean I’ve been completely immune to cheap pretties (though to be honest, these Forever 21 shoes are amazingly comfortable. Trust me, I’ve given them quite a test drive.).

The shoes, the shoes! I love shoes. I culled my collection last year and managed to get them down to under 50 pairs… I need to make another one and sort out those pretty but uncomfortable ones that I never wear.

I do need some new shoes though, like a pair of yellow sandals.

I don’t know while I”m a sucker for vintage shoes images from the 1930s and 1940s, I do have a soft spot for vintage hat styles. Right now, I want decoeyes.com reproduction display head for my hats. But the particular model I want is $300!

I am a handbag girl for sure, but all through winter I wear hats. I find while in a hat, men open doors for me and people treat me with a lot of respect. A bit of a puzzle to me.

Shoes, definitely! How I wish shoes were still $2 or $3!! It’s so funny how all the adverts are so blatant with their bandwagon fallacies; “The new bootie everyone will be talking about!” :) ))

Oh I love it allll!! Shoes would be up there…right next to any crocheted accessories I can get my hands on (esp. hats and gauntlet gloves). Hey, I’ve got a 30s robin hood hat in my shop right now!!!

Oh, I’m a sucker for hats! The only problem is that I can’t wear them often since I almost always wear my hair up!!! So how did they do that back in the day? Flat hairdos under their hats? Wish I knew the tricks!

Definitely a shoe girl! Hats take a close second, but I can’t stand purses (although I have one, I usually use a wristlet)! I think it is for the same reason I don’t love wearing rings…I am clumsy and they get in the way/get hooked on things. Also, working in ye olde retail means I get to see all the obsessive purse buyers who buy new purses at least once a week which just makes me feel queasy.

I really wish they sold more shoes like these! I love shoes so much, but I don’t think my feet do. I also love hats, but always feel a bit overdressed when wearing one!

If we’re talking vintage, I’m all hats. But modern shoes are my soft spot. I do have a small purse stash, but I have a really hard time finding vintage purses that appeal to me. So I’m really kicking myself for not buying the most adorable white wicker one with red and blue accents!

Ah!
I love 30s footwear. Shoes and styles from that era have usually nice heels – not too high but very pretty and comfortable. I also think they work well with many modern outfits. (At least my kind of modern – which means pretty heavily vintage inspired!) I have a pair of overshoes that used to belong to my great grandmother, but I rarely wear them because I’m afraid they would be ruined by the harsh chemicals that are used to melt snow and ice on roads up here.
Really like those hats too. I wish people wore hats more often! I have a tiny collection of vintage hats, but wear them less and less after I cut my hair short. Sadly, some of them just don’t work with short hairdo.
I also love that petal-like collar in the last picture! Very cute!

Wonderful scans! I’m a hat person, fo sure. A beautiful hat can really top off any outfit, and change the flare of the clothes. The shoes in these scans are however gorgeous, I am partial to 30s/40s high heels. IRL though, my feet can handle very few shoes (cushioning… and compability with ortho in-lays. Darn troublesome feet!) and my head fits into more hats =)

I have to agree with Erika. I love shoes, but when you wear the hard-to-find size 10.5, they can be a challenge. Hats that fit are easier to find; and, as a bonus, they are more stylish than sunscreen!

I’ve always considered myself a hat person, but recently I have been totally taken by shoes. I think in this post I’m particularly obsessed with the shoes! I just don’t really have an eye for bags. but that’s alright I suppose.

I love my shoes and handbags, but I’m also crazy about scarves! Vintage silk scarves always just kick up the class of an outfit and gauzy summer versions are such a light weight way to pull an outfit together.

I am definitely a shoe person! Can’t get enough of them. I think, I got a serious addiction and those pictures definitely let me swoon! I still need to warm up with hats. I got 2, but only rarely wear them.

I am most definitely a shoe person. Oh man! Sometimes, I have to just go and buy a cheap pair somewhere (rarely, because I’m not really a cheap shoe person) just to satiate my fetish. There’s nothing, I repeat, NOTHING like a good pair of red shoes. It just so happens that I now have three good pairs too! Eeeeekkk! Total shoe lover here!

I love the inspiration here. Especially the heel heights of the shoes. Gosh they look so perfect and easy to wear. I need some that have those wing tips!

Oh, I love these… the 1930s are my favorite decade for footwear, I think; their smart little oxfords can’t be beat! And gosh, I want that maple leaf purse in the last scan sooo badly, haha!
Thanks for sharing :D

I think the hats win out for me, because my feet are so small I can hardly find shoes that fit, let alone shoes I adore! LOL … the first hat to the left – must say I owned a hat almost identical to it, but becauase it did not fit, I sold it on eBay; this was years ago. I can’t imagine finding hats at 1.00 these days. I’d snap them up in a hurry!

I do like the shoes, if only I could find them now – they might fit, as narrow as they were back in the 30s and 40s.

The collar/gloves sets are darling.

Thanks so much for sharing, Casey!

Do I have to choose? I love both hats and shoes, and then there’s a few other things such as gloves and scarves too…But hats and handbags are the hardest to resist…The scans are lovely!

I think I am just an accessory lady! I love shoes, hats, scarves, purses, and gloves! Oh to be a lady in the 30s, 40s, and 50s where you didn’t get crazy looks for dressing like a lady!

I agree with you that the dancing shoes are soooo gorgeous! I love the high toes and booties too!

I am firmly in the shoe camp. I love shoes! If only we could still but lovely shoes like those today. With modern shoes I have a tendency to buy things that don’t have even a hint of vintage appeal even though I would snap up many pairs of those in a heartbeat. :]

Gloves and hats, though I have few of either. Gloves that fit are hard to (I have Sigourney Weaver hands – long hands and even longer fingers) and when I buy hats, I think I am buying them for me and my cat thinks I am buying them for HIM. He will “hunt and kill” any accessory on it and then promptly make a bed inside it. (He is only about 9 lbs despite his buff little muscles.)

I used to have an out of control shoe habit. I had at least 200 pairs (I did wear all of them at least once) and some were spendy… $300-400. When I moved in with my boyfriend I managed to cut my collection down to 30 or so. He still thinks I have too many though. I just couldn’t justify having all these shoes that I wore when I worked in an office just sitting in my closet. I work in a very casual environment now and heels just don’t work for my job.

After shoes, bags are also something I used to have lots of. I’ve started making my own bags and cut my purchased ones down to the ones I love to death. It helps that I don’t go out to clubs or bars anymore, so I don’t miss all of the clutches I used to have, that I have no use for anymore.

Not a hat person myself but always admire them on other people. Now shoes, oh lets not go there! What I like about this collection is the similarity despite the styling. They are mostly heeled oxfords except for the strappy dinner shoes. I can just see a few of those with fall clothes. I have a significant vintage handkerchief collection. Need to get those out, it’s like time travel.

Hi,
As an artist, I want to share with you how we can force the Chinese government to disclose the whereabouts of Artist Ai Weiwei who is imprisoned without charges.
I found a poll on Qwanz.com ” Should cultural exchanges between China and the rest of world be boycotted until the whereabouts and charges against Chinese artist Ai Weiwei are clarified?
If we all answer this, share it on Facebook and Twitter, and then , through the site, send on results, to Elected officials, government agencies and the press, we may be able to create together enough noise and pressure to force the Chinese Government to react.
Please click on http://qwanz.com/headline/international-eventually-by-country/should-cultural-exchanges-between-china-and-the-rest-of-world-be-boycotted-until-the-whereabouts-and-charges-against-chinese-artist-ai-weiwei-are-clarified/
Your voice is important. Please help.
Many thanks;
Paul

Shoes, shoes and more shoes! I discovered Fluevog shoes a couple years ago, and haven’t looked back since – très magnifique! Actually, I’m a sucker for hats too; berets and cloches and pillboxes, oh my! Having said that, I’m definitely loving the leaf-shaped bag on the last page, I wonder how I’d go about making such a thing???

Wow! Those ads are amazing! I love looking at ads and watching commercials from past decades… such simpler times! Thanks for posting these :) Where do you find them? Oh, and I’m mostly a shoe girl, but I also love hats. Also, I just wanted to say your blog is awesome, I’ve been following it for a couple of weeks now but this is my first time posting. Your hair tutorials are great!! Have a nice day :)

I love this post! I’m a shoe, hat and handbag kinda girl, but shoes, glorious shoes, make up the majority of my closet. I own several pieces in this post. A darling little robin hood hat.

It’s one of my favorites.

And two pair of overshoes. In fact, one pair IS the Velveteen Overs pictured on the bottom left!

How cool is that? It’s nice to know what era they are from. Thanks for posting this!

Shoes, bags, hats? What, you mean I have to choose??! OK, if I have to choose, shoes number the most in my wardrobe, followed by handbags then hats. And we are having all these lovely end of financial year sales (in Australia)…there is even the occassional treasure amongst the dross…

You can never have a fat day in shoes/bags/hats and they are so convenient to try on (no need for disrobing).
