30×30: prelude

Have you ever looked into the depths of your closet and felt like you have nothing to wear? As though you continually pull out the same half-dozen pieces over and over and wear them in predictable combinations? I have definitely felt in a bit of a style rut lately with my own wardrobe. Despite having quite a few vintage and self-made pieces that are truly pretty and fun to wear, I often feel like I have been pulling out the same pieces over and over and not mixing them in inspiring ways. So that is where Kendi’s 30 for 30 challenge comes in! It’s no new phenomena–she’s done four of these thirty day, thirty garment challenges (and so have plenty of other stylish people!). But I just discovered this shortly after the first of the year, and have been fascinated by the idea.

Why am I doing this? Perhaps it’s a creative exercise in less is more. Or maybe I want to prove to myself that if I had to downsize and pack away the majority of my closet, I could still put together pretty outfits with very little. Still quite possible is that I have spent far too many late nights looking at all the 30 for 30 participants and thinking “darn… this looks fun!”.

I want to learn how to mix things with more ease and look past obvious combinations and try and pick up on some less-conventional ones. Utilizing my accessories stash is another big reason for taking part in this; all those scarves, hats and belts I’ve thrifted over the years lying forgotten? Well, time to pull those out to add some zing to an ensemble. It’s taken me about a week to figure out what to include, whittle down my list of garments and refine the combinations a bit. (Yes, I’m being an obsessive control freak and have plotted out 30 outfits in a spreadsheet already. Just in case I get stuck in a rut halfway through!)

Looking at the pile of clothes that are to become my wardrobe next month makes me realize I have a definitely color scheme going on. While I’m visually attracted to bright colors, I find myself more often buying things in medium shades of blue and pink, with a good dose of black and white. At least for the summertime; my winter wardrobe seems to have a few more bright options. But I think that is something telling about my closet: I prefer soft, classic combinations of color. Things that evoke the idea of fuzzy old photographs and faded fabrics. Romantic. Vintage. Feminine. That sums up my essential aesthetic in a nutshell!

Kendi has included a list of rules for her 30 for 30 challenge; of which I think are excellent. But, I have decided to modify this a bit (of course). Firstly, I am allowing myself 3-4 thrift/estate sale jaunts in the next month, though the focus will be on thoughtful purchases. Things that will work in my wardrobe and I need (like some of the worn-out basics I am in dire need of replacing). I can’t wear any clothes I find until after the 30 for 30 challenge though. I also plan on sewing garments during this time (you didn’t think I could go a month without sewing, did you?!), but again they can’t be worn as an all-day outfit until after the challenge.

So now that April is almost here, I’m gearing up to get started on this project! Though I won’t be starting until Monday, April 4 because I’m a bit nutty about starting things at the beginning of the week. Which means that I won’t be done with this challenge until around my birthday! (Kind of a neat way to kick off 26, huh?) I also don’t plan on doing daily outfit posts, although I will be documenting each outfit photographically. I’m going to do little compilation posts of looks from the previous 3-4 days; just so things don’t become a bit too overrun with outfit posts around here!

Have you ever tried an outfit challenge like this? Got any tips? Or perhaps you might join me in this challenge for the month of April? The more, the merrier I always say!

3 dresses? I could never do it, I like my dresses too much!!

Paige March 31, 2011 at 11:46

YES! I’ve done this twice and it’s been such a learning experience. You’ll love it.

Fiona - Straight Talking Mama March 31, 2011 at 11:46

This is such a great idea, but April would be a terrible time for me to try in the UK, we could have snow next week and blazing sunshine by the end of the month, I might try it in July though! Even if people don’t actually do it, it’s a great exercise in looking at what you have and what truly fits, my problem is I love vintage and if I see something I like that fits I buy it regardless of whether it fits in the wardrobe, that goes for vintage material too. However I’ve realised I need less prints and some plain bottoms and tops to go with all the fab prints!

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:10

I’ve got the same problem with buying vintage (or just pretty pieces!) too! I think that is part of the reason I’m doing this: to step back and learn to evaluate purchases (no matter how tempting!) based on what will work in my wardrobe, versus what is something that will just end up hanging in the closet because it doesn’t really jive with my other clothes.

I forgot to mention that you might find things *within* your 30 items that you can weed out of your closet. I did a 30×30 in February, and there was a pair of shoes I didn’t wear once. And if I don’t even wear them during a challenge, do I *really* need them in my closet? Tragic, but true.

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:12

This will be a great bonus! :D I am definitely looking forward to being able to do a little more closet cleaning with some perspective this time. I’m already eying my vast collection of black handbags as possible candidates for thinning things out. ;) hehe!

It’s such a great idea!!!! I was following Kendi’s posts and I must say I found them very inspirational. I’m looking forward to your posts as you are using refashioned and vintage items. Good Luck and I will be closely following your blog.
P.S.: I love your 30s style floral blouse!

Little Black Car March 31, 2011 at 13:03

I wear the same stuff over and over again despite having a stuffed closet. (I’m working on the stuffed closet–making garage sale plans.)

My problem is that I have too many “stand alone” dresses and not enough mix-and-match basics. I have a drawerful of turtlenecks but no basic skirts. I have several awesome dresses but they are too assertive in style and color to mix with anything.

I keep meaning to get on the basic-skirt bandwagon but who wants to sew a black twill A-line when she could work on Advance 4922?

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:14

haha! I know what you mean; both about the stand-alone pieces and hunkering down to sew “basics”. I’d much rather sewing something exciting! Although I really need to cross off a few, much-needed basics from my sewing list this spring. (Like jeans, navy blue trousers from my favorite 30s pattern, and a few tshrits.) It’s just so hard to focus…

I’m amazed by only 1 pair of pants! This spring I am challenging myself to wear more skirts and dresses, but that is proving difficult with the cold. It is still 30 F up here and we’re expecting another foot of snow tomorrow… just when the rest of was finally melting!

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:15

Part of me is a bit scared that I only included one pair, but I don’t really wear pants much anyway, so I figured I’d try to keep this list based on what I would wear, versus what I think I’d wear. ;)

Skirts can be tough to wear in cold weather; although I do miss being able to wear colorful tights with mine in the cooler months! (It never really gets cold, long enough down here for tights.) Here’s hoping spring comes for you soon! :)

Kelly March 31, 2011 at 13:38

I’ve done this twice and actually ended up donating half my wardrobe after! it’s a lot of fun to mix and match the pieces you choose. :) Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Ms.Cleaver March 31, 2011 at 13:38

I’m currently on day 22 of Lent (47 days). This year I gave up pants- which is a big deal for me. I’ve definitely found myself looking at my wardrobe in different way and realizing the gaps (not enough solid-colored or casual skirts or casual dresses). I’ve also been documenting it everyday (almost) and it interesting to see what really is me and what’s truly flattering etc. Some things I wouldn’t think I’d like wearing much (magenta tights) I’ve come to really enjoy picking our in the morning.

There are definitely days when I just “don’t wanna,” but then I do it anyway, because in the end it’s just clothes, right?

chriss March 31, 2011 at 14:27

I love this challenge but… am going to wait. April around here spans too wide a range of weather — I think choosing 30 items for a month is enough of a challenge without that! I do plan on trying this for June, though, once I have a more reasonable range of temperatures to work in : )

Emma March 31, 2011 at 14:48

I’ve wanted to do this challenge for a while now, I just need to find a month when I’ll have the time! It’s such a great idea and so inspiring to see how different people remix their items. I’m excited to see how you get on Casey!

What a great idea!

I used to wear black and white saddle shoes when I was a kid! I’ve been looking for a pair :) Where did you get yours?

Ruthanne March 31, 2011 at 20:45

Amber, I don’t know where Casey got her saddles, but you should go check out Muffy’s. http://www.muffys.com They have every kind of saddle you can think of!

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:18

Ruthanne was correct in recommending Muffys for my saddle shoes! :) They’re a bit pricey, so I’ve had to wait a bit to get them (Christmas present ;) ), but are really great quality and I know I’ll have them for years to come. I also know that Payless sells a more budget-friendly saddle shoe on their website (I’ve never seen them in the stores), and several friends tell me they are really comfortable shoes.

I too tend to over-think/over-prepare when planning wardobe sets (I pack for trips 3 days to a week in advance just so I have time to re-evaluate space and weather needs! haha). But seriously, I think you will find that this challenge is fun and liberating. I want to try it after I’m done nursing the little bubs so I can see my wardrobe with new eyes. If this is any encouragement…one year in college, my parents were homeless so I had ONE suitcase to live out of for an entire year, in Philadelphia no less. I made it work somehow and still managed to get compliments too! Have fun with it and I look forward to seeing your posts!

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:20

I’m the same way with packing for trips! As long as I have time (e.g. it’s not an emergency trip), I usually start creating outfit/packing lists about a week in advance! hehe. That still, of course, doesn’t mean I have it 100% nailed, but it at least makes me feel like I (hopefully) haven’t missed anything important. ;)

Penny Dreadful Vintage March 31, 2011 at 16:41

I would be hopeless with something like this, I have too much fun dressing up. It is a great idea though, and I can;t wait to see how you wear your saddle shoes. Good luck! x

Lisa March 31, 2011 at 17:00

If I didn’t need to count my shoes, that might include my WHOLE wardrobe! Since I always seem to be making for everyone else, I never even get to my darning. (I DO have far too many shoes.) Living in San Diego, the weather doesn’t really change enough to warrant a “winter wardrobe”. (It’s in the 80′s today). Sorry to those of you still in snow.

Stephanie March 31, 2011 at 17:25

This looks crazy fun! I might I have to make time to seriously consider doing this this weekend.

Lainie March 31, 2011 at 18:15

This looks great, i will have to follow this and see if I can do the same. I buy and buy clothing that I never wear. It’s terrible.
PLEASE include outfits while you do this!! I am so interested to see what you come up with.
Good Luck!

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:20

I’ll definitely be posting the outfits as I do this! :) Look for the first installment around Wednesday…

A creative challenge is great for the soul, and mind, and everything else! Most especially if you blog about it, too. I’ve done two 30-day blogging challenges recently, and my best advice is to plan ahead – which you’ve already done! Knowing what comes next will save you when it starts to feel like the days are piling up on each other.

Good luck!

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:23

I’m really, really looking forward to the creative aspect of restricting my wardrobe for the next month! I haven’t done anything like this in a long, long time–it just sounds like it’s going to be a great way to help wake up my imagination in regards to my wardrobe and learn to see things in a new light. I can’t wait!!! :)

Amy March 31, 2011 at 18:59

Interesting challenge, will be following! I’m even tempted to join in…

megannielsen March 31, 2011 at 19:04

I think you’re going to have so much fun!! I think it’s really clever that you’re going to do compilation posts rather than daily outfits – I wish i had done that when I did the 30 for 30. As much as the challenge itself was really fun, I really got overwhelmed by all the posting!!

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:22

Thanks for the encouragement, Megan! :) Yeah, the idea of daily outfit posts kind of scared me… My hat goes off to gals like you who manage it with such panache! :)

Corinne March 31, 2011 at 20:31

Never have, can’t picture it, anxious to see how you do it. However, when I think about it I frequently wear essentially the same “type” of clothing every day. I’ll observe.

Sheri March 31, 2011 at 21:12

I haven’t done any 30 x 30 challenges, or really any, I suppose, except just trying to pull out stuff I haven’t worn in ages. I am going through my wardrobe this spring, weeding things out and trying to make sure that I can coordinate everything I’ve got in there with at least two other items so I don’t have things hanging there and I wonder, “What am I going to wear with that?!” :P I don’t know how much of a challenge that will be, since it seems half of my wardrobe is black. (I am slowly adding more color and prints though.) The more challenging thing for me will be to try to make some changes to a few items that don’t fit quite right or I’m not happy with, either with alterations or making a dress into a skirt or something. (I’m not a true seamstress, so we’ll see how it goes, but, if it doesn’t work, I can try cutting it down for one of my girls, right? :)

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:25

It’s funny you should mention half your wardrobe is black… Years ago mine was too, but now it’s skewed in the opposite direction! Which may sound fun, but presents new and even more “interesting” challenges. ;) Hopefully this exercise for the next 30 days will help me figure out some sort of balance!

That really is a great idea! I love, love, love your creamy lemony bow shoes, wow! I can’t wait to see the photos. Been enjoying your updates here (especially the sewing ones! thanks for introducing me to Colette patterns!) sorry I have been quiet on the commenting business! Oh my goodness I just HAD to let you know about this as well, whilst browsing on etsy I found a vintage oil painting that could be your twin!!

Alli March 31, 2011 at 21:38

This sounds like it’s going to be heaps of fun Casey! You definitely have to post up your outfits so we can see how you are going, not to mention, so we can pick up a couple of great ideas off you along the way ;) . I won’t be participating- to be honest, I don’t think I have that many nice clothes to do it. But my challenge for myself this month is to FINALLY start sewing! I now have a book to follow to help me, so fingers crossed before the end of April I will have created my first ‘masterpiece’ heehee ;)

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:27

Hurrah for sewing!!! Do keep me updated, Alli–I’d love to see how your projects turn out (I’m sure they’ll be adorable!). :)

Renee April 1, 2011 at 00:22

That sounds like such an interesting idea. But I have to say I am definitely a wear the same things over and over kind of person. Right now we are having coolish weather again. Once it heats up again I wear capris all the time. They are just cooler and more comfortable for our muggy summers (which start in April or May).

Jayne April 1, 2011 at 03:01

Sounds like a fantastic idea- it will be interesting to see what outfits you come up with ;) I always find myself staring into my wardrobe with eyes glazed over, desperate to come up with an outfit combination. I think most of the female population are in the same boat!

Diletta Donati April 1, 2011 at 17:44

Dear Casey,

I love your website! I first found you on youtube while looking for 40′s makeup tutorials. I loved your work, and have subsequently been getting up to a lot of fun with plats, flowers and hairspray. But now I’ve actually discovered a whole new world by exploring your website and then meandering into the links. It’s fantastic! What a wonderfully creative, feminine, welcoming atmosphere emanates from all of these beautiful pages!
Your new lace top is amazing. So elegant and delicate. What a great project.
I’m just now heading off to tackle a mountain of UFO darning ! Thanks for all the inspiration :-) Diletta

Casey April 4, 2011 at 09:28

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such a lovely comment, Diletta! :) I’m so delighted that you’re enjoying everything and exploring this little corner of the web (which is terribly fun and creative–I do love it so! :) ). Do drop by again!

the fabled needle (jen) April 2, 2011 at 02:54

such a great idea! i could use some help looking past obvious outfit combinations as well. (i think that’s why i like dresses so much: they’re so easy!) sometimes i’ll feel extra creative and do something different and be proud of myself but otherwise i don’t put too much thought into my dressing. (which i should; like you i have a ton of forlorn accessories that i adore but hardly ever wear!) anyway, i look forward to what you do with this!

Samantha April 2, 2011 at 05:18

I wear a uniform at work, which kinda sounds like cheating! It is 4 pieces that I will be wearing for probably 18 days of 30.

Tikkitiboo April 3, 2011 at 00:28

What a great idea! I have long been a collector of too many clothes half of which I don’t wear and still moan about having nothing to wear… I am now seriously taking this advice and diving into my wardrobe now:)

Rebecca Jean April 3, 2011 at 11:31

Oh man, I can’t believe you are going to do the 30 for 30! You’re a much braver woman than I. I’ve kicked the idea around in my head for a while, but never committed to it. If I took a good hard look, I probably only wear a select few pieces over and over again, but the thought of not having options freaks me out. I like to go through my closet periodically and do new pairings. Pull everything out, try it on and create new ensembles complete with accessories. I have a private flickr set called “style files” that documents the outfits so I can reference them later.

Good luck with your challenge! I look forward to seeing your remixes.

That is a great idea about having a set of photos for outfit ideas, Rebecca Jean! I am going to have to swipe that from you. ;) hehe. I sometimes put together really interesting (at least to me!) combinations, and either loose the paper I jot them down on, or totally forget. Visual referencing would help loads!

Jojo April 3, 2011 at 14:36

Wow, Casey, I think that’s a great idea. As a person with too much clothes in a too small wardrobe, I often forget half of the clothes I own. Every time I sort through my wardrobe, I’m impressed by how much beautiful clothes I have and don’t wear and although I promise to wear them more often but nothing happens. I’ll definitely consider doing such a challenge, but as you’ll start tomorrow, that’s a little bit short dated for me, but I’m curious to see how you’ll be doing. Good luck!

Collette April 7, 2011 at 00:53

I just recently read about the 30 for 30 challenge and think it is a great idea. I am trying to convince myself I am brave enough to commit to it. And the weather is so wacky here now too (in the 70s one day, lots of snow the next!) Anyway, I love looking at all your cute things you make and am excited to see how you tackle the 30 for 30 challenge.
